As Diverse as they are...

Gardens on Vashon and Maury island are not quite the same as those in urban or suburban areas. We live in a beautiful rural setting that offers a gardener anything from an intimate cottage garden, to living on a 40 acre parcel of land with many acres of cultivated garden. And everything in between. We have a diverse number of microclimates, mild winters with maybe a hint of snow, and generally warm summer Mediterranean weather. Two gardens just a stone's throw from one another may find blooming and fruiting times that differ. We have open meadows as well as densely forested land with many club members living with a periphery of 150' Douglas fir trees beyond their gardens. We also have many small beach communities whose gardens may have to not only weather stormy elements, but also salt water spray.

The variety of garden design styles we have may range from formal, to casual English country perennial gardens, to creations that have a highly selective modern look. Our temperate climate offers us the opportunity to grow things as diverse as cactus and ornamental banana plants, to peaches and persimmons. Cultivating our favorite flowers may go hand-in-hand with having a vegetable garden, an orchard, cane fruit and many types of other berries. Enjoy meandering through some photos of what living on this island has inspired us to create.
